Sports and competition have been around for thousands of years. Individuals turned every day chores and activities into a
race or challenge to see who could complete it faster within a village. As time went on it became a competition between
villages and then on a national level. As parents, an important lesson for our kids is to learn the meaning and personal of
values ofsportsmanship when a child is young.
First, always be proud of your child and their team whether they win or lose a game. A child looks to you for how you
view each important siutation in life because you are their first teacher.
Second, find a positive play during each game. All children enjoy receiving feedback on how they did during a game.
Third, there is no I in team because it is a team effort. A win takes many individuals coming together as one to play
or score. When team members do not unite as one, the competition can block each member or score easier.
Finally, practice with your child. It is a great chance to share your values, but it sends the strong message that you
care about them and their sport.
Sports can bring a great opportunity to learn between parent and child when it comes to positive values such as
sportsmanship and team effort to our youth. These lessons can last a lifetime through their sports and education.
